A number of potential treatments may be undergone when working with a dentist for optimal oral health. Of the various procedures, root canal therapy may be the one that is approached with the most apprehension. Often, roots canals are performed in our Buffalo dental practice to address a persistent toothache. There are times, however, when the need for treatment is discovered early, during a routine exam and x-ray.
Because root canal therapy is so commonly preceded by intense pain, the procedure has developed a bad reputation. The butt of jokes and topic of tall tales, root canal therapy is actually similar to getting a filling, which means the procedure is not painful. As with most restorative procedures, root canal therapy is performed under local anesthetic, numbing the treatment area. In our office, one may also choose to undergo this procedure with sedation such as laughing gas or oral sedatives.
Many people wonder if there is a way to avoid the need for root canal therapy, or an alternative way to eliminate tooth pain. A root canal is performed when a tooth and its internal structure have become damaged and infected. A tooth may become infected in a few ways. Primarily, infection in the root canal tends to stem from an untreated cavity. Gum disease may also pave the way for harmful bacteria to enter the root area of a tooth, leading to inflammation and pain.
When you consider the two most common factors that lead to the need for root canal therapy, you can see that there are ways to avoid this treatment. Ultimately, your dentist wants to preserve the health of your teeth and gums through regular preventative care. Dr. Kent and our hygienists, during routine exams and cleanings, will assess all areas of the mouth, and provide conservative treatment when problems like cavities or gingivitis are detected early. We also work with patients who have gum disease or a high instance of cavities to help them maintain health between visits with proper oral hygiene practices. By continuing excellent hygiene at home, including brushing, flossing, and use of oral rinses, as directed by your dentist, you stand a far better chance of avoiding root canal treatment.
Should the need for this restorative treatment arise, Dr. Kent has the skill and advanced tools to complete treatment quickly and with great precision. Our patients’ comfort is maintained with local anesthetic, and peace of mind cared for with sedation techniques when requested.
